Cambodia, India Celebrate Launch of Direct Flights, Look to Strengthen Ties

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia 21 May - Cambodia and India exchanged congratulations on the upcoming launch of direct flights between their capitals, Phnom Penh and New Delhi. The new route is expected to boost relations between the two countries in several key areas.

The news came during a courtesy meeting between Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen and Indian Ambassador to Cambodia Devyani Uttam Khobragade at the Senate Palace on May 21.

Ambassador Khobragade expressed optimism that the direct flights would further strengthen ties between Cambodia and India in the realms of politics, economy, and security. She also recalled the successful state visit of Cambodia's King to India in May 2023 and extended an invitation to Senate President Hun Sen to visit India in his official capacity. Additionally, she expressed hope for a meeting between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and India's new Prime Minister sometime this year.

Senate President Hun Sen acknowledged India's unique role as the sole democratic nation to support Cambodia following its liberation from the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979, while Western nations imposed sanctions. He commended the positive collaboration between Cambodia and India within the ASEAN framework and expressed gratitude for India's scholarship programs for Cambodian officials and its co-chairmanship of the International Coordinating Committee for Preah Vihear (ICC-Preah Vihear).

The launch of direct flights signifies a positive development for Cambodia and India. It is expected to facilitate travel, trade, and cultural exchange between the two nations, paving the way for a stronger and more comprehensive relationship.
